|

Location: Morehead City
Brian Efland is the marine conservation and enterprise development specialist at North Carolina Sea Grant. A former banking and loan officer with a deep passion for North Carolina's coastal resources, Efland brings extensive knowledge of business and boating to his position at Sea Grant.
Through workshops and conversations, Efland helps coastal businesses identify ways to grow and adapt to changing communities and economies. One of his most popular and ongoing projects is an annual, hands-on demonstration of how to properly handle bluefin tuna to command a higher price at market. The workshop is the basis for an instructional DVD and waterproof deck card titled "From Capture to Ice: How Handling Tuna Affects Its Price."
Efland is currently part of an inter-institutional project sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to evaluate the socio-economic value of oyster sanctuaries in the Pamlico Sound. He has also partnered with local fishermen to host paddle fishing workshops, promoting sustainable eco-tourism in areas once dependent upon commercial fishing.
Efland has a masters degree in business administration from Appalachian State University and a bachelors degree in management from North Carolina State University.
