White Joins N.C. Sea Grant and WRRI

Ecologist Susan N. White has arrived at North Carolina State University as executive director of North Carolina Sea Grant and the Water Resources Research Institute of the University of North Carolina.

"I have had a great welcome from staff and colleagues and I am eager to have extended discussions with our partners around the state as the two programs continue their missions to identify and fund needed research, and to provide outreach and training on critical issues."

In particular, she is pleased with a smooth transition as she has several weeks to work closely with Michael Voiland, who is retiring as director of both programs later this month.

White's office is in the WRRI suite in Module 7 of the Varsity Research Building at 1575 Varsity Drive, across from the entrance to Centennial Campus. The Sea Grant program offices are currently in Module 1 of the same building, but the program anticipates moving to Module 7 in 2013.

Previously director of the Hollings Marine Laboratory in Charleston, S.C., White will lead the two state/federal partnership programs that are the state's connection to respective national networks. Sea Grant receives funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. WRRI has funding from the U.S. Geological Survey.

Formerly the national research coordinator for NOAA's Estuarine Reserves Division and National Estuarine Research Reserve System, White is a board member of The Coastal Society. She has served on national and regional steering committees on topics including technology transfer, integrated drought monitoring and early warning, and climate's connections to health. White, who earned a doctorate from the University of Georgia, is returning to her home state. She grew up in Orange County and graduated from Duke University. Read more in the hiring announcement.
