Hurricane Floyd Symposium: Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Floyd

Sept. 17-18 — City Hotel and Bistro, Greenville. Sponsored by East Carolina University's Center for Natural Hazards Research (CNHR) in partnership with NOAA, RENCI, UNC Institute for Public Health, NC Sea Grant, and the National Weather Service.

Join us for this two-day event to hear about the latest in cutting-edge natural hazards research. A public forum on the 17th focuses on the response to and recovery from Hurricane Floyd. Speakers from across the country will discuss a wide array of topics including lessons learned, the state of the region since the flood, the ways in which state and local officials are addressing issues related to natural disasters, and the ways citizens can better protect themselves and their properties from future disasters.

A research conference on the 18th brings researchers from various fields of hazards research to discuss broader issues related to mitigation, response and recovery. Speakers will include Laura Furgione, now an assistant administrator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.  Furgione was the National Weather Service's warning coordination meteorologist in Newport/Morehead City when Floyd struck.

Also, Sea Grant researchers will present preliminary findings for the CI-FLOW project to develop flood warning systems, as well as a study of emergency communications.
