Ten years ago, North Carolinians had a wary eye on Hurricane Floyd. In the Autumn 2009 issue of Coastwatch, join North Carolina Sea Grant as we take a look back. In this anniversary issue, Pam Smith follows the lead-up and aftermath in southeast counties and talks with residents about what they remember and how they recovered after high winds walloped their coastal communities.

Katie Mosher checks in on Sea Grant researchers to examine how emergency communications flow through formal and informal networks. Kelley Brackett takes a look at new regulations to keep people and pets together during coastal storms after Floyd separated hundreds of animals from their owners. Christy Maready, a Coastwatch reader, describes how flooding from the hurricane destroyed her relatives' farm and split up her family for days.

In other stories, Jerry Allegood examines recovery and rebuilding efforts in Princeville, Kinston and Greenville after Floyd's floodwaters wiped out entire communities. Smith checks in with Spencer Rogers, North Carolina Sea Grant's coastal construction and erosion specialist, to learn how dune and beach nourishment projects fared after storm surge from Hurricanes Floyd and Dennis. Robin Wienke explains CI-FLOW, a revolutionary flood-forecasting project set in the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico river basins, and how it's partnerships enhance flood forecasting. Wienke also takes a look at Floyd's effects on fisheries, among those, blue crabs, oysters, bay scallops and fishermen. And Mosher introduces in on Laura Furgione, a NOAA official, who recalls her experience as the warning coordination meteorologist in Morehead City/Newport during Hurricane Floyd.
