Mstaff_barrowary Beth Barrow returns to North Carolina Sea Grant in a new role as fiscal officer. After four years of handling other financial and grant-related matters for North Carolina State University, Barrow says she is happy to be back at Sea Grant.

"I really enjoyed being here before, but I left to gain more knowledge in the grant and financing fields," Barrow says. "It's good to be back."

She credits her experience in the NC State Office of Contracts and Grants and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as providing her with a wealth of experience and preparing her for her new position. Her new responsibilities include managing money that comes into Sea Grant — all state and federal money, and grants or proposals associated with those funds.

"It's very different here than any department on campus in that we have grants that we award out along with the funds that come here," Barrow says. "It's just a matter of figuring out the paper flow here versus other departments on campus. Most of those issues I'd already handled when I was here before."

Originally from Wake Forest, Barrow graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelor of science in political science and a minor in business administration. She later was an administrative assistant to the director of Sea Grant from 2002 to 2005.

Michael Voiland, Sea Grant executive director, says that Barrow brings a valuable skill set to her new position.

"We are delighted — and lucky — that Mary Beth can rejoin the NCSG family and assume a critical role in the program's operations. Having not only past Sea Grant experience, but also deep experience in university grant and contract matters, makes her a special resource to our staff — and also to the faculty we fund," Voiland says.

Barrow takes over the Sea Grant fiscal duties upon the departure of Tammy Cox, who moved to a position at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
