The North Carolina Coastal Resources Law, Planning and Policy Center will hold its Fourth Annual “Shape of the Coast” Program on Friday, Oct. 23 at the Riverfront Convention Center in New Bern. The program is part of the center’s continued efforts to educate the state’s legal community and others on coastal issues.

This year’s program will include a variety of topics — including water resources, coastal insurance and wind energy. In addition, attendees will hear an update on current issues before the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission by the panel’s Chair, Bob Emory.

Other speakers include:

• Richard Spruill, East Carolina University
• Amy Pickle, Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, Duke University
• Donald Hornstein, University of North Carolina School of Law
• Rose Vaughn Williams, N.C. Department of Insurance
• Tyler Newman, Business Alliance for a Sound Economy
• Jennifer Cohen, Insurance Federation of North Carolina
• Charles "Pete" Peterson, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
• Joseph J. Kalo, University of North Carolina School of Law

Lisa Schiavinato, the center’s co-director and North Carolina Sea Grant’s coastal law, policy and community development specialist, says there is no pre-registration deadline. The easiest way to sign up is online at the UNC School of Law’s Web site.

“We developed the “Shape of the Coast” program as a service to educate attorneys on coastal issues,” she says.

However, Schiavinato notes the program is not for attorneys alone. Instead, it is designed for anyone who has an interest in the issues, including state and local officials, engineers and coastal enthusiasts.
