SAFMC Council Meeting Comes To Atlantic Beach, NC: Dec. 6-11

Dec. 6-11, 2009 Sheraton Atlantic Beach Ocean Hotel, 2717 W. Fort Macon Road, Atlantic Beach

The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC) is holding a council meeting in Atlantic Beach, NC, from Dec. 6 to Dec. 11. The meeting is also being broadcast live on the internet.

The SAFMC meeting locations rotate throughout member states, and this is the last North Carolina meeting until next December.

Meeting agenda highlights include discussions by the Snapper-Grouper Committee on Amendments 17A, 17B, and 18, regarding red snapper overfishing and other issues. An informal Q&A session for the public will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 9, and the official public comment session will be held on Thursday, Dec. 10.

The public can watch a live, online broadcast of the SAFMC meeting. Go to the Ustream web site (www.ustream.tv), and type "SAFMCTV" in the search box to find the broadcast feed. Note that the search results will not show the SAFMC feed when the broadcast is inactive.

This is the third SAFMC council meeting to be broadcast online. "The Council's jurisdictional area covers federal waters from the NC/VA border southward to the Florida Keys," says Kim Iverson, public information officer for the SAFMC. "Video streaming allows those who are unable to attend a meeting in person the opportunity to observe meeting discussions at both the committee and full-council level throughout the meeting week."

SAFMC says the use of the live video stream has been popular among constituents that follow the Council meetings, as well as the recent series of public hearings held by the Council regarding management measures proposed for snapper-grouper species.
