A Coast Worth Reading About

Started in the early 1980s as a Sea Grant newsletter, Coastwatch has evolved into North Carolina Sea Grant’s flagship publication — a full-color magazine produced throughout the year. The award-winning magazine has a subscriber base that spreads throughout North Carolina and the Southeast across the nation to Alaska, Maine and California.

Coastwatch

Written by Sea Grant’s editors, fellows, interns and top-notch freelancers, articles appearing in Coastwatch highlight Sea Grant-related research and the program's outreach efforts in education, coastal communities and maritime heritage. As a publication of North Carolina Sea Grant, a federal and state partnership program, we do not print advertisements for products or services. At times, certain community events involving Sea Grant staff or research are announced in our Tidings section at the front of the magazine.

Departments

In addition to compelling feature stories, Coastwatch has several rotating subject departments, including:

• Sea Science explores the latest maritime science and technology research

• Naturalist’s Notebook focuses on the state’s unique coastal plants, animals and geological formations

• People and Places highlights exceptional people, communities and events along the coast

• Mariner’s Menu provides easy and delicious recipes for fish and shellfish species commonly found in North Carolina’s coastal waters
