North Carolina Sea Grant strives to increase marine and ocean literacy among people of all ages. Our extension specialists help develop and promote numerous programs and resources focused on ocean education, including the Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence -- Southeast (COSEE-SE), and the Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association (SEACOOS). Sea Grant specialists make sure teachers and other educators connect with the information and resources they need to bring the ocean alive in classrooms, aquariums, museums, parks and environmental centers.
Ocean Education Survey Recently, our marine education specialist, Terri Kirby Hathaway, conducted a needs assessment of marine and ocean education in elementary school classrooms. Hathaway polled more than 1,100 K-5 classroom teachers in public, private and charter schools across North Carolina during the spring of 2006. The overall results are being analyzed on a geographical basis and the information will be used to target workshops and materials to meet specific needs of elementary school teachers
